Disk Storage
You will be provided with an e-mail account that will also serve as the
main account for your domain. That account will have up to 50MB of file
space to store your website files along with any stored e-mail for that
account, assuming you use it for e-mail also. A web-based Customer Account
Center provides a simple way to view how much space you have left at
any given time.
FTP Access
You will be able to access your domain via FTP using the name ftp.yourdomain.com
for the purposes of transferring files to and from your website.
Telnet and Secure Shell Access
You will be able to interact directly with your website files by connecting
to the web server using Telnet or Secure Shell (ssh). Telnet is included
with Windows and most other operating systems. It is likely that you
will need to download an SSH client for your computer. SSH is a more
secure way to connect.
Additional E-mail Only Accounts
These are accounts that can only be used for sending and receiving e-mail.
There is no dialup service, personal web storage space, or access through
Telnet or SSH using these accounts.
Virtual Users
If you want to receive e-mail to an e-mail address using your domain
(e.g. username@yourdomain.com rather than username@bluemarble.net),
then you will need to have a virtual user created. That can be done
by contacting Technical Support with your request. Mail for your virtual
user will be forwarded to one of your physical e-mail account.
CGI Scripting
CGI scripts are one way to adding additional functionality to your website.
You can write or download applications that communicate to databases,
providing dynamic content for your website, acts as a shopping cart,
etc. Usually the use of CGI scripts requires some knowledge of programming
languages.
Graphical Web Usage Statistics
You can keep track of how much traffic your website is getting using
our graphical web-based reports. The report shows reports for the past
year on how many people visit your site, which pages are accessed the
most, and a variety of other statistics.
Unix Shells
A shell is a little like a mini-operating system when you access the
web server using Telnet or SSH. It is unlikely you would need to change
your shell from the default unless you have a preference based on shells
you have used in the past.
Perl Access
Perl is a common programming language that is available on the server.
It is most commonly used to create CGI scripts. There are a variety
of books available on learning how to use Perl.
PHP Scripting
PHP is a common programming language that is available
on the server. Unlike Perl, the PHP code is inserted directly into
your web pages.
There are a variety of books available on learning how to use PHP.
ASP Scripting
ASP is a common programming language that is specific to Windows servers.
You will not be able to use ASP.
Password Protected Pages
You have the ability to protect certain pages to prevent everyone from
being able to view them. A username and password would be required
to view the protected pages.
Daily Data Backups
Your files are backed up everyday. For a fee, you can have a file restored
from a previous day. However, you will need to notify Technical Support
immediately as the ability to restore your file diminishes as more
time passes.
UPS Power Backup
Backup power is provided to ensure your website remains functional should
our facilities lose power.
Toll Free Support
You can contact our Technical Support staff using a toll free number.
Web Page Hit Counter
Upon request, we can help you add a counter to your home web page that
will display the number of people who have visited your site.
Form to E-mail Script
Upon request, we can help you add a form to your web page that will allow
somebody to submit information to you via e-mail.
Extra 5MB disk storage space
If you are running low on disk space for your website, you can purchase
more for a monthly fee.
Additional E-mail Only Accounts
If you need more than the allowed number of e-mail accounts, you can
purchase more for a monthly fee.
Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Extensions
FrontPage extensions allow you to use Microsoft FrontPage to edit your
website. That functionality is provided for a monthly fee.
SSL Encryption
You can provide secure communication between the public and your website
using SSL encryption. This would typically be used if you are having
the end user enter private information such as a password or credit
card number. There is a monthly fee for this service as well as the
cost of purchasing a SSL Certificate.
MySQL Database
MySQL is available if you need to store information from your website
in a database. Both PHP and Perl have the ability to communicate with
MySQL although it requires a more advanced understanding of both the
programming languages and databases.
