Dial Up

Setup Documents

How to set up your dial up connection on a Windows XP operating system:
1. Click on your START menu
2. Click on Control Panel

3. You want to be in category view, so make sure that is selected in the top left-hand corner

This is what it will look like after you switch to category view:

4. Click on Network and Internet Connections (2nd icon down in left-hand column)

5. Choose “Set up or change your internet connection”

6. Now you will be looking at the “Internet Properties” box

7. Remove any connections already made (click on them one time then click the “remove” button, so that the box is empty)

8. Click the “Add” button
9. Now you will see the “Internet Connection Wizard”
10. Make sure that “dial up to private network” is selected, choose next

11. Type the phone number that you are dialing up to, choose next

12. Type the name that you wish to call your connection (anything you want), choose “finish”

13. Now you will see the “Settings” screen. Make sure there is nothing checked on this screen.
14. At the bottom of the screen type the username and password that you set up with Smithville/Bluemarble (leave “domain” blank), choose OK

15. Now you will see the “Internet Properties” box again
16. Make sure it says “(default)” next to the connection you just created (should be the only one there)
17. Make sure that “Always dial my default connection” is selected and choose OK.

18. Now we’re back at the “Network and Internet Connections” screen
19. At the bottom, choose the 2nd icon, “Network Connections”

20. Right click on the new connection and choose “create shortcut” (this will tell you that you cannot create a shortcut here, do you want to place one on the desktop instead? And you will choose “yes”)

21. Now right-click on the new connection again and choose “Properties.” This brings up a new window. Click the “Networking” tab in the back, and then click on “Settings.” This will bring up another new window, “PPP Settings” and you need to uncheck (click on the box so that the checkmark goes away) the first box, “Enable LCP Settings” and click the “OK” button, the “OK” button again on the next screen.

22. Now when you want to connect to the Internet you will double click the new icon on your desktop and choose to either Connect or Dial. Once connected you have to open a browser window (such as Internet Explorer or Netscape) to surf the web!
