Dial up setup on a Windows 95/98 operating system

Step 1: Check to make sure Dial-Up Networking is installed

Dial-Up Networking is the component that Windows 95/98 uses to access your modem. Without Dial-Up Networking, you will not be able to dial out from your modem.

1. From the desktop, double-click on the My Computer icon. You should see an icon for the Dial-Up Networking folder. If this folder is there, then Dial-Up Networking is installed on your computer, and you may proceed to Step 2.

2. If there is no Dial-Up Networking folder, double-click on the Control Panel icon. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. Click on the Windows Setup tab.

3. Locate and select the Communications group, then click the Details button below

4. A new window should appear. Make sure there is a check mark in the box to the left of the Dial-Up Networking folder. If there is no check mark, click in the box and a check mark should appear.

Note: If Dial-Up Networking was not installed, you may be asked for your Windows 95/98 CD when you click OK. After the files have been copied, you will be prompted to reboot your computer.

5. Once verifying that Dial-Up Networking is installed, click the OK button to return to the main Windows Setup screen. From here, click Apply and then click OK. You will now be able to close the Control Panel and continue with the setup. If Dial-Up Networking was already installed, you will NOT have to reboot your computer.

Step 2: Creating the BlueMarble Connection

The following steps will help you to configure your dial-up connection to the Internet.

1.On the Windows desktop, double-click on the My Computer icon. Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon. Double-click on the Make New Connection icon.

2. You should now see the first screen of the Make New Connection wizard. Enter BlueMarble for the name of the connection and click Next

3. The next screen asks for the telephone number that you want to call. Enter the telephone number given on your Start Here sheet.

If you cannot find your dial-up telephone number on your Start Here sheet, please select the appropriate number from the following chart.

323/ 33X/ 349/ 353   935-1000
355/ 855/ 856/ 857   935-1000
961   935-1000
659   658-1000
824   823-1000
825   826-1000
828/ 829   935-1000
837   823-1000
863   862-1000
876/ 935   935-1000
879   935-1000
936   938-1000

4. A screen will now appear informing you that you have successfully created a new connection. Click Finish to return to the Dial-Up Networking window.

5. In the Dial-Up Networking window, you should now see an icon with the name BlueMarble beneath it. Right-click on this BlueMarble icon, and left-click on Properties on the menu that appears.

6. A new window should appear entitled BlueMarble. You should see a line that says either Use Country code and area code (for Windows 95) or Use area code and Dialing Properties (for Windows 98). Remove the check mark from the box in front of this line.

7. Click on the Server Types tab at the top of the window. The Type of Dial-Up Server box should be set to PPP: Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 95/98. (Older versions of Windows 95 should be set as PPP: Windows 95, NT 3.5 Internet.)

In the Advanced options section, make sure that none of the options are checked. If you see a check mark in front of any of the options, click on that box to remove the check.

In the Allowed network protocols section, make sure that there is NO check in front of NetBEUI and IPX/SPX Compatible, and that there is a check in front of TCP/IP.

8. Click on the TCP/IP Settings button. When the TCP/IP Settings window appears, make sure that Server assigned IP address is selected. Next, select Specify name server addresses and enter the primary and secondary DNS numbers on your Start Here sheet. In every location the DNS numbers are the following:

Primary DNS

204.89.253.1

Secondary DNS

204.89.253.2

9. Click OK to return to the Server Types window. Then, click OK to return to the Dial-up Networking window.

Step 3: Creating a short-cut for your BlueMarble connection.

The following steps will help you put a BlueMarble icon on your desktop, so that you can connect easily in the future.

1. In the Dial-up Networking window, right-click on the BlueMarble icon, and left-click on Create Shortcut in the menu that appears.

2. An error message will appear that says, "Windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead? Select Yes.

3. Close both the Dial-up Networking window and the My Computer window. Your connection is now complete and ready to use. It is a good idea to restart your computer at this point.

Step 4: Making a connection to BlueMarble

1. Double-click on the BlueMarble icon.

2. The Connect To box should appear. Enter your username and password and click Connect.
3. Once connected to the Internet, you may use any application that requires network connectivity, such as Internet Explorer, Netscape Communicator, Eudora, or other applications. You may also configure these applications so that your BlueMarble connection is established automatically when you launch the applications. To set this up, see the setup guide for the particular application you are interested in.
